Jazz Connections: Everyday Lives

Jazz Connections: Everyday Lives is the overall title of three linked collaborative projects that brought together jazz scholar, Dr Pedro Cravinho and freelance jazz photographer Brian Homer. The projects were conceived after Pedro and Brian met at the Birmingham City University (BCU) Jazz Research Cluster.

Included are photographs and quotes from musicians involved in the Birmingham jazz and improvised music scenes. The interviews were carried out between 2018 and 2023. The combination of photographs and interview quotes provides a unique insight into how active members of the local jazz scene view themselves and the scene, and how they negotiate their lives while developing their professional, musical and other careers.

Tymek Jozwiak: “...my daughter is five now and after she was born I realised that I have to work during the day to earn some money. Then in the evenings I try to just do the things I really want to do...it's changed and has been changing over the years but that's my setup now. I teach for living and I play gigs for, I guess, extra income and because I enjoy it but I don't rely on it.”
